Since 1983, P. Vijay Kumar has been on the faculty of USC, where he is currently a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. He also holds a joint appointment with the Department of Mathematics. In 1996-97, he was on sabbatical at the Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

He delivered a plenary lecture at the 1992 IEEE Second International Symposium on Spread-Spectrum Techniques and Applications, Yokohama, Japan.

In 1993-1996, he was an Associate Editor for Coding Theory for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory.

He received the USC School of Engineering Senior Research Award in May 1994 for contributions to coding theory.

A CDMA sequence family, introduced in a 1996 paper co-authored with T. Helleseth, A. R. Calderbank and A. R. Hammons, Jr., is under consideration for use as spreading codes in the (IMT-DS, W-CDMA)-component of the upcoming global IMT-2000 Standard.

A 1994 IEEE publication co-authored with Roger Hammons, Robert Calderbank, Neil Sloane and Patrick Sole received the IEEE Information Theory Society's 1995 prize paper award and led to news reports including those in the Wall Street Journal and Science. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Research Interests : Error-correcting codes including codes on graphs, space-time codes, algebraic-geometric codes and low correlation sequence design.
